ASHES BELONGS TO ENGLAND

Friday, November 6th, 2009

England has done it again consecutively for the second time in winning the Ashes. This is a special moment to cherish for all of us. Full credit goes to the England team and their captain Andrew Strauss for achieving this.

England regained the title as they went on to win the fifth and final test against Australia by 197 runs, leading to 2-1 series win. Michael Hussey was the last man to get caught by Alastair Cook off Graeme Swann after making a battling 121 runs taking his team score to 348 runs, but that was not enough against the huge target of 546 runs set by England.

Steve Harmison took 3 wickets and Swann took 4 wickets that lead to the victory. In the first innings, England made 332 runs but the Australians were able to make only 160 as Stuart Broad and Swann send every batsman to pavilion without much time for them to spend at the crease. Broad claimed 5-37 and Swann 4-38. Then Australia had no chance of coming back into the game and England roped in that chance to win the test as well as the series for the consecutive second time.

All-Rounder Andrew Flintoff will be very happy to exit from the test cricket with the big Ashes win. Let’s hope that this man continues to play international cricket for some more years.

Umpiring Controversies

Thursday, September 10th, 2009

Cricket is a game which is liked by millions of people all around the world. It is an entertaining sport that can is played in every corner of the world in the form of gully cricket. But playing at the international level is really a big achievement.  Out of which umpiring a match is another big accomplishment. It is really tough to umpire for the test as it may take five days to complete. Human error is common but it may not go in favor for a particular team. In the recent match between Australia and England umpires made a wrong decision. If the umpire has a little bit of doubt he must refer the third umpire. The three controversial judgments went in favor for the England team. The match got a crucial turn because of these major blunders in umpiring.

Koertzen is responsible for the Australian defeat. There may be a chance for Australia to bounce back to win the match by chasing that mammoth total. I can’t believe why Koertzen did not refer to the third umpire when Hughes was caught in slip by England captain Strauss. Strauss may not know about that the ball touches the ground. Everyone who watched the replay gets stunned because of these blunders. Doctrove gave out to Michael Hussey. But the replays showed that the ball didn’t touch the edge of the bat. Field umpires can refer the third umpire. But most of the time they are not doing that. Third umpire can able to view the ball in different angles. I am wondering why they are not fully utilizing the technologies. In the earlier days controversies occurred in the Sydney test. That made the tourist side to boycott the presentation ceremony. Umpires must realize the issue and come forward to make use of technologies. They should not fool the match because of their controversial decisions. Manual error is acceptable but only up to a certain extent only.

T20 Kills Test

Friday, July 10th, 2009

T20 popularity has increased to a great extent. It is the shortest version of Cricket as of now. Most of us have passion to watch cricket. We can get results within a short span of time. It is difficult to watch all the five days in the test cricket. But it is the actual form of cricket. Test cricket shows players responsibility and capability. Every player learns the game from a test match. It is easier for any batsman to score runs inT20 as they can play with same energy throughout 20 overs. But it is really hard to stand for a long time in the ground for scoring runs. Bowlers face the tight situation to bowl consistently during those five days. Player’s performance can be decided only from the test cricket.

The success of T20 cricket led to the introduction of IPL event that is recognized by the International Cricket Council. It is the real boost to the world of cricket. But on the other hand it is the greatest business deal in cricket. Many young cricket stars arise from this event.  The business increases to a large level as its turnover is really high. It boosts other businesses too. Nowadays people are keen in doing duties within shorter span of time. They are encouraging this shorter span of cricket because it is the time equal to that of watching a movie. Test cricket has to survive for a long period. We should accept the new forms of cricket but we should not eliminate the real soul.

Ashes 2nd test

Saturday, May 2nd, 2009

I am very much fond of watching cricket. I knew about the Ashes clash right from my schooldays. I loved to watch the Ashes because of the factual battle between the two great teams. The battle had been continuing right from 1882 till today it has not lost its grace. Australia is currently holding the Ashes trophy.

England had won the ashes in 2005. I saw the second Ashes match in July 2009. It was really a tough game and it was nerve-racking as the result came on the fifth day. The openers laid the solid underpinning for the England. The other players capitalized the situation and struck to the basics with the game.

Australian players failed to lay the platform. Wickets fell at regular intervals. There were no steady partnerships in their first innings. England bowlers completely outplayed the Kangaroos in their first innings. As expected that England did not enforce Australia to follow on.

It is the right decision to set the target in a rain interrupted game. In the second innings also England openers laid the platform that enhanced the lead beyond 500. England bowlers again did their duty getting five wickets for just 125 runs. We knew that it is really hard to chase above 500 runs on the final day but anything may happen in cricket and that reflected in the innings played between Clarke and Haddin because at one point of time the English bowlers struggled to break the partnership.

But unfortunately Haddin lost his wicket. Flintoff claimed his five wicket haul at that venue. In the end England won the battle with 115 runs. The retirement of legends like Langer, McGrath, and Warne proved a costly loss to Australian cricket. It has been reflected in some of the recent Australian matches. It’s really hard to fulfill their gap. Australia has to show their team effort to get back into the series.
