iPhone Suicide

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

Mobile phones and PDA’s are indeed ruling the world like demons, but not to an extent like this. I came across peculiar news where an employee of a factory that manufactures iPhones committed suicide subsequent to a loss of a prototype that went missing. The 25 year old Sun Danyong worked in Foxconn Technology Group as an executive. The Taiwanese company manufactures Apple artifacts at a huge factory near Hong Kong. Working in these types of industries involves lots of stress as top level confidentiality is to be maintained on gadgets. Since Apple is one of the top most firms in the world which produces up-to-the-minute technology products, it has to enforce such pressure on its employees to uphold the secrecy of its products and software. Unfortunately Mr. Sun lost one of the models of the 4th generation iPhone that were under his control. He was very much badly timed because the company did not trust him and badly beat him up and apprehended him too. The disappointed lad jumped from the 13th floor of his flat building abruptly ending his life in dismay.

I was so shocked on hearing that because a man’s life has no respect when compared to an instrument that just fits into our pocket. It is really annoying when a young lad is forced to commit suicide just for a loss that happened without his knowledge. In today’s chaotic world mankind has lost its value and money’s dominance is at its peak. It in fact symbolizes for what real preference is given now a days. The poor fellow had a good future which he ended unthinkingly. He is also to be blames for his cowardly act. Perhaps he may be a too sensitive person which may have driven him to take the extreme step.

METALLIC GLASSES

Friday, June 5th, 2009

Metallic glasses are metal alloys that have the properties of magnetic properties, high strength, better corrosion resistance and ease of fabrication. The structure of no long range atomic order is achieved by selecting a suitable alloy.

Alloy must be quenched so as to develop a liquid like structure in the solid. This process must be carried out rapidly then only liquid structure will be maintained in the solid material. Generally metals are rigid, malleable and ductile and glass is a transparent solid, brittle and amorphous. But the metallic glasses both the properties of glasses and metals.

Metallic glasses can be easily produced and also they are available at cheaper cost. Metallic alloys are manufactured by some methods. One of them is the twin roller system. In this method of twin roller system, the molten alloy is cooled rapidly between two heavy rollers running in opposite direction thereby producing sheets of metallic glasses.

Depending on the requirement of thickness the distance between the two rollers are adjusted and then the molten alloy is passed between them. The other method is the melt spinning system, here the molten alloy is allowed to run over the spinning wheels.

By varying the speed of the spinning wheels the thickness of the metallic glass sheets can be adjusted to the required thickness. Alloys of iron-boron requires very high cooling rate in the range of over million degrees per second so that they become glassy. But palladium-nickel-phosphorous and palladium-copper-silicon alloys requires very much lesser cooling rate when compared to iron-boron alloy, they require the cooling rate as to be hundred degrees per second.
