ORIGIN OF HARRY POTTER
Saturday, May 30th, 2009Once J.K. Rowling was travelling in a crowded train to London, she got an idea about Harry. She felt very excited in getting such an idea, as she was writing books right from the age of six years. Then she started to write the book “Harry Potter and Philosopher’s Stone” and completed it by 1995.
She sent the manuscript to several prospective agents but no one recognized her. She found it difficult to get the support as eight publishers had rejected the Philosopher’s Stone story. She simply kept her fingers crossed and patiently waited for something to happen. By that time, Bloomsbury accepted Philosopher’s Stone and offered an advance of £2,500 to Rowling.
Bloomsbury asked her about the age group she had targeted. She had no answer to that, as she did not have any particular age group in mind. Then publishers decided to target children in the age group of nine to eleven. By the time of publishing, she was asked by the publishers to adopt gender-neutral pen name so as to make it reach among male members of that age group. She then decided to use J.K. Rowling with her original name being Joanne Kathleen Rowling.
